Mental Wellness
Mental Health is invisible, hard to diagnose; self-awareness is the key but it is a complex process/term. It isn't easy to clearly define mental disorders or diseases that exist. Every person has the right to feel mentally healthy, supported, and helped. Often, we come across people who end their lives due to mental illnesses that are both acute and chronic in nature. The fact remains that, due to advancements in mental health management and treatment of disorders and diseases, both medication and access to counseling services are available to everyone. There are several psychiatrists, from Dr. Thirunavukkarasu to Dr. Sivabalan and Dr. Anbudurai, who are doing their part to build awareness, and they have embarked on a journey to touch lives meaningfully.
All said, how to identify and rightly point out that you and I have a problem.
Observe your daily routines, monitor your daily interactions, track your performance, and observe your social behavior. Any alterations or disturbances to your routine are one way to detect the existence of a mental issue. The next step is to speak up and seek help. Advice and counseling from trustworthy individuals can go a long way in taking the discussions to the next step. When there is a real concern, fixing an appointment is mandatory.
How to treat it? What options do we have?
The course of the treatment may vary based on the severity. Psychiatrists may prescribe medications to manage the illness and/or suggest behavioral modification techniques, habit formation guided by a psychologist as a means to restore good health. In today's world, medicine-based treatments have seen a plethora of advancements. The side effects of medications have been reduced, and the duration of medication is also purely dependent on severity; medicines are not lifelong, which is good news. Compliance with medications and setting routines are certainly essential to avoid relapse, and the absence of either would lead to disastrous outcomes.
These are my views based on my interactions with physicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists from Stanley Medical College, SRM, Sri Ramachandra, and also my interest in mind-related concepts. Above all, the human mind is complex; researchers still say that learning about mental health is an ongoing effort.
